L. A. Cetto Petite Sirah 2005
VARIETAL: Petite Sirah
REGION: Baja, California/Mexico
PRICE: $10
I must admit I was a bit intrigued by the origins of this wine. I had never tasted a wine from the Baja peninsula and after closer inspection of the label I was a bit confused about whether or not the wine is considered a Mexican or California wine. Research only led to more confusion so I just had to crack it open and see what it was all about.
At first whiff the L.A. Cetto Petite Sirah is quite appealing. Lots of jammy fruit on the nose and a hint of spice. But the romance stopped there. I don't know if this bottle was a little cooked, or just past its prime, but there was nothing appealing about the taste. I found the fruit to be a bit bitter on the palate and for a Petite Sirah, it lacked lushness and any sort of finish. No kidding, I mean there was NO finish, zero taste in your mouth after the first few bitter sips. Weird . . . and disappointing after reading so many glowing reviews of previous vintages. Perhaps I'll give it another shot down the road. . . way down the road.

I love, love, love this wine. I don't profess to be any sort of an expert - but this wine is so smooth I drink it alone in the evening to relax. I have shared a couple of my bottles with friends and they have all said it is one of the better Sirah's they have tasted.
Jorge, I think it is important to keep in mind two things: 1. Tasting wine is a subjective business and 2. There are a number of things that affect a wine's taste that the producer can't control. For example, this wine might have been exposed to heat or other unfavorable storage conditions which might have accelerated the aging process and left it rather lacking. Or this vintage could be past its prime. Gold medal notwithstanding, I am compelled to report my experience with this wine as any other. I would not be opposed to re-tasting, but it would have to be a sample from the producer because I surely will not spend my heard earned dollars on something I did not enjoy the first time... unless I come across a new release, of course.
hello noel, i don´t know if you taste that wine with something that close your nose or your taste, because this wine have a gold medal in bruxelles, so, please take another notes with that wine, because if professional people that have a very exigent palate says that wine should have a gold medal, i think you are wrong in your post so ciao ci vediamo doppo
